Abel Sánchez is a novel written by Miguel de Unamuno in 1917. This novel is characterized by a great deal of envy and misfortunes among its characters, and features an interesting outcome. It is the story of two friends, Abel Sánchez and Joaquín Monegro. But while Abel seemed to be liked by everyone and have more luck, Joaquín was more disliked by others. Abel dedicated himself to painting, and although he wasn't entirely good at it, he was very famous, while Joaquín dedicated himself to medicine, without excelling in his field. Joaquín falls in love with Helena, his cousin, but she doesn't pay him much attention and one day he decides to introduce her to Abel, with the fatal outcome that Abel and Helena fall in love. That's when everything begins. Joaquín gets angry with Abel and with himself for having such bad luck, that he isn't even happy in love, since Abel takes his girlfriend. Joaquín begins to sink into despair, as anything he does seems insignificant compared to what Abel does. Day and night he tortures himself because of him. He remains like this for a long period of time. Until he meets Antonia and marries her, though more out of apathy than love. The relationship between Joaquín and Abel continues unchanged for some time, until Joaquín has a daughter and Abel a son, who eventually marry each other. In the end, Abel's son begins to befriend Joaquín, as he also studies medicine, and during this period it seems Joaquín's problems begin to resolve, since Abel's son thinks the same of his father as Joaquín does; that he is selfish, that he only thinks of gaining merit, etc. Thus Joaquín's life unfolds in apparent happiness, until they have a grandchild.
