Emilia Pardo Bazán published Insolación when she had already been recognized as a great novelist after the success of the stories of Los Pazos de Ulloa and La Madre Naturaleza; her knowledge of the European novel then led her to the rostrum of the Ateneo and she began to send chronicles of her trip to Italy to El Imparcial. Insolación is, according to its author, an episodic study. That of the Marquesa de Andrade will be the beginning of a more spiritualistic phase of narration in the sustained realism of Emilia Pardo Bazán. The naturalist premise, unlike in previous works, is absent in this novel; the presence of the outside world is more relevant and is subordinate to the intimate world of literary creatures. This is reflected in the use of an unusual and more complex narrative technique.
