The presence of this historical novel is not only intended to fill an episode of nation-building at a complex and decisive point of its birth, but also to address a literary issue where this complex period is rarely explored. Therefore, the presence of this novel offers us an alternative reading to view the course and waves of history differently and from a different perspective. This tetralogy is divided into four books. This division can also be interpreted as the splitting of movements that emerged in several periods. And this third novel, *Footsteps*, is the phase of organizing resistance. Minke mobilizes all his might to fight against the centuries-old entrenched power of the Indies. However, Minke does not choose armed resistance. He chooses the path of journalism by creating as much Native reading material as possible. The most famous, of course, is *Medan Prajaji*. With this newspaper, Minke calls upon the Native people to do three things: increase boycotts, organize, and abolish feudalistic culture. Simultaneously, through journalistic action, Minke proclaims: 'Educate the people with organization and educate the rulers with resistance.'
