Beyond Sleep is the story of the young Dutch geologist Alfred Issendorf, who wants to conduct research in the harsh, marshy north of Norway to substantiate the hypothesis of his mentor and supervisor Sibbelee. Issendorf is ambitious: he hopes that something great will befall him on this journey, that his name will be linked to an important scientific fact. This ambition is linked to the desire to complete the work of his father, who died in an accident during an expedition. But a doom also seems to rest on Alfred's expedition. Willem Frederik Hermans (1921-1995) received the Prize for Dutch Literature in 1977 for his entire oeuvre.
