Published for the first time in 1898 with little success, it is the story, in a Trieste enlivened by the clamor of Carnival, of an "existential hero" whose social protest, whose refusal to consider himself a child of the times, surrenders to love for a woman, an irresistible mixture of sensuality and devotion, grace and blatant vulgarity, selfishness and pity. With "Senilità" Svevo enters into the fullness of his literary maturity. In the work one breathes, now free and natural, what Montale defined as "the epic of the gray randomness of our everyday life."
